The Easiest Way to Migrate OneDrive

I have 50 GB of OneDrive and find that my Space is not sufficient anymore. The simple question is how I move my OneDrive to the other cloud Provider like a Google Drive or OneDrive for Business. There is no reason for me to buy a personal subscription to Office 365 to get 1 TB storage since my office has 5 TB OneDrive for Business and Office 365 Pro Plus. The real question is how to move my OneDrive to another Cloud provider like OneDrive for business.

Step 1. Analyzing where do you want to migrate

If you found that the huge amount of storage is dried because of photos, there will be good if you put your photos to free photos storage such as Google Photos. You can put unlimited photos on Google photos with reduced quality (2K resolution). But If you found that the storage is used for personal video that you down wat to store it on Youtube, you can put it into another storage such as OneDrive for Business, Office 365 Videos, or Amazon Drive. Here are my personal recommendation

  • Daily usage documents: Onedrive for Business or OneDrive (it well integrated with Office)
  • Videos: Youtube, Google Photos
  • Music: Onedrive, Amazon Drive, or don't store it just subscribe Spotify
  • binary / big files: Google Drive, Asus Webstorage

Step 2. Migrating Strategy

There are two migration strategy

  • 1# Using local sync. The idea is to download the entire files and cut the files into another place to sync. for example, migrating OneDrive to OneDrive for Business. This local sync model is great when you usually work with the files. For example, I migrate my powerpoint slides by using this local sync since I need to work with the files during the migration
  • 2# using remote sync. This is my recommendation for you who want to migrate the content by enabling direct connection between cloud storage. I personally use http://multcloud.com. They provide 2 TB migration traffic for free. I joined the premium for one month and it provides me a quick migration between OneDrive to the others.

Step 3. Cleaning the Storage

After the migration process is done, you can clean and delete the file into recycle bin. On OneDrive, you can recover your storage by just moving them to the recycle bin
