Wake Up, Programmer! AI makes you Dumber Than Before

In this blog post, I will discuss the impact of generative AI on the programming profession. Generative AI is a branch of artificial intelligence that can create content such as text, images, music, code, and more. It uses deep learning models to learn from large amounts of data and generate new outputs based on some input or prompt. Generative AI like GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio Intelli Code, and Chat GPT are impressive and have many potential benefits for programmers, such as:

  • Saving time and effort by automating tedious or repetitive tasks, such as writing documentation, testing, debugging, or refactoring code.
  • Enhancing creativity and innovation by providing new ideas, perspectives, or solutions, such as generating novel algorithms, designs, or features.
  • Improving quality and performance by optimizing or refining code, such as reducing errors, bugs, or complexity.

However, generative AI also poses some challenges and risks for programmers, such as:

  • Reducing skills and knowledge by relying too much on the generated outputs without understanding how they work or why they are correct.
  • Losing control and ownership by trusting the generated outputs blindly without verifying their validity, accuracy, or ethics.
  • Facing competition and obsolescence by being replaced or outperformed by the generated outputs, especially if they are cheaper, faster, or better than human programmers.

Therefore, generative AI does not necessarily make programmers lazy but requires them to adapt and evolve. Programmers need to:

  • Learn new skills and tools to use generative AI effectively and responsibly, such as data analysis, model evaluation, debugging or ethics.
  • Develop critical thinking and judgment to assess the generated outputs critically and selectively, such as checking their sources, assumptions or limitations.
  • Embrace collaboration and diversity to complement the generated outputs with human inputs, such as feedback, review or refinement.

If not lazy, is that really productive?


But does GitHub Copilot make programmers more productive? This is a question that many developers are asking themselves, especially those who are curious about trying out this new technology. In this blog post, we will explore some of the benefits and challenges of using GitHub Copilot and how it can affect the productivity of programmers.

One of the main benefits of GitHub Copilot is that it can save programmers time and effort by generating code snippets that are relevant and accurate. GitHub Copilot can suggest code for everyday tasks, such as parsing JSON, sorting arrays, or creating UI components. It can also handle more complex scenarios like writing tests, implementing algorithms, or integrating APIs. Another benefit of GitHub Copilot is that it can help programmers learn new skills and technologies by providing examples and guidance. GitHub Copilot can suggest code that follows best practices, uses the latest features, or adheres to specific standards. A third benefit of GitHub Copilot is that it can improve the quality and reliability of the code by reducing errors and bugs. GitHub Copilot can suggest syntactically correct, semantically consistent, and logically sound code. It can also help programmers avoid common pitfalls like memory leaks, security vulnerabilities, or performance issues. GitHub Copilot can detect and fix errors automatically, such as typos, missing parentheses, or undefined variables.

However, GitHub Copilot is not a perfect solution that can replace human programmers. It still has some limitations and challenges that must be addressed before it can be widely adopted and trusted. One of the main challenges of GitHub Copilot is that it is not always accurate or appropriate. GitHub Copilot is based on statistical patterns and probabilities, not on logic or reasoning. It does not understand the meaning or purpose of the code or the project's context or requirements. Therefore, it may suggest irrelevant, incorrect, or incomplete code. For example, it may suggest code that breaks the functionality, violates the license or exposes sensitive data.

Another challenge of GitHub Copilot is that it may reduce the creativity and originality of programmers. GitHub Copilot is influenced by the existing code that it has seen and learned from. It may not be able to generate novel, innovative, or customized code. It may also encourage programmers to rely too much on its suggestions without thinking critically or independently. This may lead to a loss of skills, knowledge, or confidence for programmers.

A third challenge of GitHub Copilot is that it may raise ethical and legal issues regarding the ownership and responsibility of the code. GitHub Copilot generates code based on the public code available on the internet. It may not respect the intellectual property rights, privacy rights, or ethical standards of the original authors or users of the code. It makes you more productive but makes you less critical thinking.

GitHub Copilot is a promising tool that can enhance the productivity of programmers by providing them with intelligent and helpful code suggestions. However, it is not a magic wand that can solve all the problems or do all the work for programmers. It still has some flaws and risks that must be considered and addressed. Therefore, programmers should use GitHub Copilot as a partner, not a replacement. They should use it as a source of inspiration, not as a source of authority. They should use it as a tool to assist them, not as a tool to dictate to them.

Based on that, I recommend you use GitHub Copilot as a learning partner, not an AI that makes you really trust and makes you lazy. But humans are basically lazy, right?
